Classroom News

For the week of Sept 9-13

I am filled with gratitude! Thank you for the abundance of classroom snack. I think we are set until Winter Break! Thank you, to the families who could make it to the Class Meeting and for the classroom job positions that were filled and all you do every day to send well-nourished, regulated children to school each day. Aly (Asher M's mom) has volunteered to be our Class Rep for Council this year, Nicole (Finley's mom), our Fundraising Rep. We still need a Garden Rep and you can talk to Zak (Wyndre's dad) about that position or let me know if you are interested. I'm honored and excited to have this new community of learners and deeply appreciate the ready hands willing to support all the classroom jobs! Questions about standardized testing came up at the class meeting and as per Marcela, families can "opt out" their student from any test.

In class this week, we have been reading books about and noticing kindnesses around school. Keep an eye out for "Spots of Kindness" on display above the coat racks in the hall. The children have been writing and illustrating their Hopes for the School Year and their Dreams for the World. Those Hopes and Dreams are in their Portfolios in the classroom and you are welcome to ask your child to share in those few minutes of drop off or pick up. They will share them with you at Fall Conferences. The children are in the garden with Paul twice a week and will be harvesting our pumpkin crop very soon. Watch for the Pumpkin Pie making sign up sheet outside the doors of Dannie's and Caron's classrooms. Harvest Festival is just around the corner!

Caron's Mathematicians:

Hurray for Math Migration! It is so fun to see some familiar faces from Kindergarten Math and meet some new mathematicians. In these first few days we did some activities to get the math brains activated, did some sorting based on attributes and took the pre-test for Unit 1. Much of the pre-test was very familiar to end of last year. I'm sending home Unit 1 Home Connections for your Mathematician to engage in and to reinforce the concepts they are practicing in class. Children do not need to show me their work from home. You can email me any time if you have any questions, concerns or comments cstehr@osd.wednet.edu I look forward to a wonderful year supporting these math thinkers!
